Step 1

Secure Your First Donation

Ask for your first donation today! Think of the people you can ask like your family, friends, and co-workers who won’t say no. Get that initial donation to start momentum. You can do it! The sooner you get started, the easier it will be to reach beyond your fundraising goal.

Step 1

Create a List of Potential Donors

Write down the names of all the people in your life — family, friends, neighbours, co-workers, family doctor, auto mechanic — don’t leave anyone out. You know a lot of people!

You’ll receive a simple email from us within one hour of registering that you can easily forward to all of your contacts. They then can click on a link in the email to donate to you online. Even better, you can personalize an email with the story about why you are taking part in Colour To Conquer. Inspire your donors to support you!

After a week, follow up with a phone call to everyone you emailed to secure a donation if they haven’t already donated online. You can also login to your Participant Centre where you will find emails already written for you to send as follow-ups and thank-yous.

Use Facebook to Fundraise for Colour To Conquer

Facebook Fundraising: Things You Need To Know

Facebook Fundraising: Things You Need To Know You may have heard the recent news that Facebook has now enabled fundraising tools across Canada. Facebook Fundraisers are a valuable tool to help you utilize the platform to fundraise from friends and family for your Colour To Conquer Campaign.

However, Facebook Fundraisers do not automatically integrate with your Colour To Conquer fundraising Account. So before you get started, here are a few guidelines to be sure you set-up your Facebook Fundraiser in a way that is able to be tracked and credited to your Colour To Conquer Fundraising efforts.

How To Set Up Your Fundraiser

  1. Get started by selecting Fundraisers on your Facebook navigation menu. This will be found on the left side of your browser for desktop devices and in the drop-down menu on Facebook mobile applications.
  2. From the Fundraisers screen, you will select the Raise Money button, then be prompted to set-up your fundraiser. Please be sure to follow the next steps to ensure your fundraiser can be recognized by Colour To Conquer and properly credited to your Colour To Conquer Fundraising Account.
  3. From the "Who are you raising money for?" menu, select Nonprofit and search for The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation

  4. Upon selecting The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, you will be prompted to enter a dollar amount and end date for your fundraiser.
  5. On the next menu screen, update the title of your fundraiser to include your first and last name, and title it Colour To Conquer. This is the only way we will be able to identify your fundraiser and your Colour To Conquer information with your Facebook Fundraiser.

  6. Once you have completed this entry, continue on and create your fundraiser on the next menu screen.

Please keep in mind that funds raised through Facebook Fundraising will take up to 60 days to be credited to your Colour To Conquer Fundraising Account. This means that funds raised through Facebook Fundraisers cannot be used for time-sensitive fundraising challenges. Further, if you do not include all relevant info in the name of your Facebook Fundraiser as outlined above, we cannot guarantee that funds raised will be allocated towards your event fundraising account.

As always, should you have questions, please contact We are here to help.

Tips and Ideas

We have amazing tips and ideas on how to fundraise. Learn more right here.

General Fundraising Ideas

1. Lead by example and donate to yourself first.

You set the standard - give yourself a good donation (such as $50 or $100) and others you ask will follow your lead.

2. Set a stretch goal.

Challenge yourself to do something great for the cancer cause. You will be surprised how generous people are and how many will want to see your hair colour transformation.

3. Create a sense of urgency.

Pick a date in the month of May as a deadline for your supporters. This will help you reach your big and bold goal more quickly.

4. Ask the right person, in the right way, for the right amount.

Write down the names of people and businesses that are a part of your life and share your story. Determine which ones you will ask in person and which ones you will ask via an email.

For the larger donation asks, take the time to speak to them face-to-face about why you are stepping up and joining Colour To Conquer and committing to the real change in your hair colour.

Don't forget to also ask those professional service people who value your business... your doctor, lawyer, dentist, hairdresser/barber... you name it! When you ask, make sure to bring a donation form with you. You may also want to print cards with your unique fundraising page URL on them.

5. Send an email to everyone you know.

Friends, family, co-workers - go through your contact list and just ask everyone. Make sure you have set up your personal page, tell a great story and link to this page in your email. And, don't forget to ask your friends to forward this on to five people they know. Get the hair challenge going, and commit to your new hair colour. People may not believe you are really going to do this, and they will donate to see it happen.

6. Tech advice.

Use it... Use it... Use it!!! Share, share, share.

Log in to your participant portal, and use the tools available to you. Create excitement before you Colour your hair, during the build up to your new look and after your colour transformation. Your fundraising page will make the task very easy - just log in and take a look.

7. Try and try again.

People are busy. Don't worry if some don't respond right away. Most people need to be reminded to donate. They aren't ignoring you, really, just keep asking those who have not donated or have not gotten back to you. Find a different way to ask each time. The fundraising page can help you track responses and contact only those that have not already donated.

8. Say thank you.

Always! It is just the right thing to do. Thank them personally and also thank them after your new hairdo with a great before and after photo. They will really appreciate the recognition and, in their own way, being part of Colour To Conquer!

9. Corporate Matching

a. Whether you will fundraise on your own, with a team, in the community or at work - find out if your company has a corporate matching program.

b. Corporate matching programs can sometimes provide a dollar for dollar match against all of your personal fundraising efforts!

Team Based Fundraising Ideas

1. Host a Hair Colouring Event

a. A hair colouring event is a fun way to support a serious cause.

b. Your event can be as simple or sophisticated as you want. Find a date that works for you, start planning and inviting others to get their colour on with you!

2. Tasty treats

Organize a Pizza Lunch, snack cart or Thirsty Thursday.

3. Hold a Bake Sale

Make treats with friends and family, and hold a bake sale in your neighbourhood, school or in the office.

4. Chores for a good cause

Approach a family member or neighbour, and offer to do some chores in exchange for a donation to go towards your fundraising efforts.

5. VIP Hair Colour Challenge

Get agreement before, but challenge the organization. If we hit XXXX in donations the president of the company, principal of the school or head coach - a very senior person with great hair - will commit to colour it some great new colour!

6. A day off

Auction off a Day off at work (get agreement from senior management first).

7. Give it up day

Ask people to give up their coffee or tea for a day or a week. For kids, that means donating your allowance.

8. Betting pool*

Betting Pool - should be: Run an in-house Sports Tournaments/Betting Pool... winner takes half and half goes to the Team's Fundraising.

9. Raffle

Raffle off some great sports tickets someone has donated. You know who has them in the organization.

10. Lunch

Raffle off lunch with the president - he/she pays.

11. Hold a wine auction or wine tasting*

If you and your team are of legal age, sell tickets 1 for $10, 3 for $20, an arm's length for $40. Secret Tip - Get all the senior people in your organization to donate a nice bottle of wine to the auction. Hold a wine tasting with sommeliers and silent auction (sell ticket to the wine tasting).

12. Bar night and wings*

Hold a Bar Night and sell tickets with a silent auction (items donated by people). Also, get a bar to contribute some of their proceeds.

13. Payday draws

Hold 50/50 raffles on paydays.

14. Media Outreach

Share your story in your community by contacting local media outlets. Local media are often looking for amazing content to share with readers, viewers and listeners.

These are but a few ideas that we know can work. Get your team together, brainstorm and plan your activities! It will be a great way to build team spirit and do something meaningful for the cancer cause.

If you collect funds from a special event, you can submit a donation form and send a cheque in the mail but this may take more time to upload to your team members and your team ranking may not reflect this for a while.

The best way to get your event fundraising uploaded once you have raised the money is to divvy it up by Team Participant and input the donations online, to each team member via a Credit Card.
